I would recommend that you read David McCollough's (sp) fascinating book on Truman. Apart from his inherent honesty, a rare commodity in politicians of any stripe, he successfully managed an unbelievable number of crises during his first few years in office, including whether to recognize the new state of Israel. Although it was not the politcally popular thing to do at the time, he did.
