The law overlooks the fact that people who are provoked by emotion are seldom deterred by law. It's a do nothing feel good law which does nothing to address the reversal of hatred. It's the kind of law that would be difficult to enforce and harder to prove. It's an emotional knee jerk to one heinous crime. An easy no fix, just write words on a piece of paper hand them out to the judges and Bingo we have a deterrent. The depth of this action barely makes it past ones nose and makes one cross eyed just looking at it.

Gore's pathetic gesture of inferring Bush views shoplifting in the same context as a hate crime is another example of his trite and dishonest utterances. How he ever passed the words from his lips without gagging amazes me.

Reinstilling moral fibre and respect for your fellow man will do more to prevent these types of crime than any law. But as we all know that requires more time, effort and persistence.

Two of the three Byrd killers will be put to death. What additional punishment would you like? Would a hate crimes law result in each of them being put to death twice? What would those supporting hate crimes legislation suggest be done differently? Pre-meditated murder certainly is a hate crime, isn't it? In fact, many who support hate crimes legislation also oppose the death penalty.

She added that Mr. Bush had rejected her family's pleas to memorialize him with a statewide hate-crimes law.

I can't imagine her pain- truly. But are laws made to "memorialize people" ? Reacting to the emotional plea of a devastated family for something you do not believe is in the best interests of the law overall might be the mark of an "I feel your pain" type leader, but I've had enough of that.
"We had an opportunity to do something for our whole family. He did nothing."
Again- a personal need- Laws should not be about one case, one family, no matter how terrible.
These are emotionally manipulative arguments and Gore used Ms. Harris shamelessly. This is a difference in the candidates' beliefs in the adequacy of existing laws. I personally side with GW on this one, but it certainly has nothing to do with any lack of sympathy for the Byrd family.

<<She added that Mr. Bush had rejected her family's pleas to memorialize him with a statewide hate-crimes law. >>

What she failed to mention is Texas had a hate crimes law at the time of the tragic death & NO BILL waits on a Bush signature!

We should all view the ugly anti-Bush propaganda as the true "hate crime".
