I hope that was a serious question otherwise I'm wasting a serious answer.

It makes no sense for the government to maintain a debt simply for the tax payers to provide interest income to others. Interest payments are a waste of tax resources.

Governments should pay off debt for same reason that families should. This one should be pretty much a no-brainer ... even for your limited thinking skills. If you're not paying off debt interest, then that is money that can be used for altruistic purposes, like improving our VA hospitals or lowering teacher-student ratios in schools across the country.
