Apes which were best adapted to the forest were the ones who pushed the others out to grassland. They had no reason to adapt, no selection pressure. Chimps of today are very much like chimps of 3 million years ago. It is those chimps who could not compete as well in the forest, but somehow managed to survive the transition to savannah that picked up the higher intelligence.
