Chimps of today are very much like chimps of 3 million years ago. It is those chimps who could not compete as well in the forest, but somehow managed to survive the transition to savannah that picked up the higher intelligence.

I'd always thought of the upright posture was an advantage to surviving on the savannah (allowing observation over the grass), as opposed to something that reduced our ability to live in the forest. The savannah as an ecosystem is relatively new in terms of the 4.5 billion years on this planet. The Age of Mammals was driven by the evolution of grasses. Some think that may have been in concert with the formation of the Himalayas to produce the Ice Ages.

But many humans continue to live in forested areas. I don't think there is any evidence for (or against) a direct competition between simians and humans, but I suppose there could have been. To stand upright, you need to develop less upper body strength proportionately.
