I'm no expert, just a fan. But, there are many types indeed. I think they are all very similar. I don't know how you could relate your personal goals to the types, except in the extreme cases.

For instance, if you just want lower impact and want to learn some self-defence, try Tai Chi. No sparing or
general rough stuff here.

Taikwondo, karate and Kung fu are similar fighting systems and all will teach you self-defence and put you in good fitness. But, they tend to be high impact and are occasionally hard on the joints. There's some risk of injury, although small from sparring.
