Americans turn out to decide future

MSNBC STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS

Nov. 7 — Voters took charge of the nation’s future Tuesday, turning out in heavy numbers for what’s expected to be the closest presidential race in 40 years. Al Gore and George W. Bush spent the day in their hometowns, while supporters staged massive “Get Out the Vote” campaigns in more than a dozen battleground states.

“I feel great,” a confident George W. Bush told reporters Tuesday between calls to voters asking them for their support

SNOW WAS hampering voters in parts of New Mexico and North Dakota, but NBC News correspondents at polling stations across the country reported higher than normal turnout in places as varied as New York City — where officials expected 70 percent of eligible voters to turn out — and Deerfield Beach, Fla., where 98 percent turnout is expected.
In California, the state election commission on Tuesday forecast 76 percent turnout, the highest in 20 years. And in Seattle, Wash., the projection was 84 percent turnout. “This is so much busier than we’ve ever seen it,” Frank Keller, a supervisor at a Seattle polling station, told MSNBC Cable.
In Wisconsin, an election official said every polling place in the capital Madison had lines. In Missouri, long lines bolstered predictions of a record 67 percent turnout. In Alabama, early turnout was described as heavy despite rain that fell all night and through the morning.

There are plenty of people running besides Bush and gore. If you can't be bothered to figure out which one you think is the best, you shouldn't be voting at all.
