ciVic: I don't know what the relevant electoral mechanisms are, but I find it impossible to believe that the winner of the nationwide popular vote would be denied the presidency because of a confusing ballot and uncounted ballot box(es). There's no way a precinct of Jewish senior citizens meant to give Buchanan 3400 votes (0.75% of the precinct's votes -- much higher than Buchanan's performance statewide). CNN has just reported that the uncounted ballot box came from a school in Palm Beach, which would lean Democrat. I heard a report this morning about a lost ballot box from a church in Miami with predominantly African-American voters, who would probably be more than 90 percent for Gore -- although I have not heard anything more about that, so it may have been an incorrect story.

All of this has to be cleared up before Bush could possibly be declared the winner. The integrity of the democratic process is at stake here. What would the rest of the world think if W won a crooked election in the state where his own brother is Governor? To say nothing about what Americans ourselves would think.
