Spare me the lecture, and read the context of the discussion. Going back to Joe's post, where I jumped in:

I believe Clinton received only 43% of the vote, vs. 48% for Bush or Gore in this election. So either man will have at least as much legitimacy. Message 14762787

Or let me just state it again: The fact that Gore got more votes than GWB in this election is a lot more relevant than the fact that W got more votes in this election than Clinton got in his elections, in terms of any abstract "legitimacy" test.

There was 8 years of perpetual whining from Republicans about Clinton's vote totals, along with everything else about Clinton. If W gets his 271 electoral votes, he'll be President, but how people who whined about Clinton's lack of legitimacy will address that issue is another question. I'm sure it will make for great entertainment, though. Consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds, and all that.

#62 outlines why there are only two senators for each state

I am in awe everytime I read something from the Federalist Papers. Their words were so commanding and so astute, and yet at the time, they had very little precedent to guide them. And the ultimate irony is that they had no idea what they were spawning.

And yes, I remember now why they did the Senate (in terms of representation) the way they did and why its considered the more important of the two branches.

Thanks for pointing this out to the thread.
