How can the marketplace determine the price of something if there is no financial instrument off which to benchmark? and it's not like anyone aside from the government could issue "risk free securities." I believe that in the old days, risk free was benchmarked off blue chip company corporate debt. However, I think that the companies were also less leveraged then. It presents an interesting issue no?
