It's an enormous undertaking but the technology exists. The nation needs to start discussing it seriously - soon.

San Francisco started using a new voting system that does just that: you have to insert your ballot into a machine at the polling place, and if you overvote, it rejects it and you cast a new ballot. It seemed to work pretty well in this election. Other California counties have started using touchscreen voting, and I have heard that it worked well also.
