The irony is the popularity of AMD chips afford the AMD motherboards makers to milk extra dollars from AMD users.

Most full featured AMD MBs has only gone down 10% since intro.

The real threat is to Intel's margins in 2001.

Maybe a big reason for Intel's higher ASPs is their server chip market. Unless AMD can eat into that space, maybe intel stays up there.

Why is Dell warning? Is the Intel only strategy starting to hurt them?

The consensus with Dell is that, even though they are growing their enterprise market products, specifically servers and storage, it isn't fast enough. They live in the low end, e.g., the 2-way server area vs. 4-way and 8-way where Compaq dominates. Same in storage. You could make a case in just PC for PC business in Gateway vs. Dell (Gateway doing better) but Gateway made a big splash about their Internet related products turning the tide for them.

JMO,

Tony

Q,

Re: < Economies of scale and greater competition will bring down mobo and chipset prices. In the end share drives prices here. This differential will only widen as AMD grabs share. >

Exactly. For AMD, achieving >9M CPU unit volume this quarter is very important, even at the expense of lower ASPs. This quarter marks the beginning of higher quarterly increase of AMD X86 CPU unit sales than ever before.

Volume -> more business for the mobo & chipset manufacturers
-> more competition + economies of scale
-> lower mobo + chipset prices
-> better opportunities for AMD to be
more competitive, and maintain/improve
ASP in the future + better/timely
infrastructure support in the future

<quasar: Don't you think that situation is changing as Athy's take market share? Economies of scale ...>

No.

Not much, anyway. I think the really important factor is lack of competition wrt CHIPSETS. I think getting chipsets out from AMD, SiS and ALi is of utmost importance. Even VIA's own new chipset would likely help somewhat.
