Zeev, I have very mixed emotions about manual recounts. Manual counts have been eliminated in most if not all states because they facilitate fraud. We as a country have determined that computerized counts come closer to the "truth" than manual counts by increasing accuracy and helping to eliminate fraud. I would hate to think that anyone doing a manual count would tamper with a ballot to make it less defective, but I believe that some will try. Because of my ambivalence, I don't know whether to be outraged at Bush for fighting a manual recount or at Gore for demanding it. The one thing I do know is that you can't just do a few counties, especially only the democratic ones.

In answer to a question from last night, an article in the local paper confirmed my prior understanding of the electoral college. It will meet with or without the Florida delegation on December 18th, but 270 votes will still be required to elect a President, not a majority of those present. In the absence of 270 votes the election will move to the House for the President and the Senate for the VP. This will be the current House and Senate by the way, not the newly elected one.

Zeeve I myself would personally not care to see a manually recount.. Why not go into each state and do the same? lets drag this out for 6 months if need be and call EACH person who has voted and ask he/she personally what their vote was? Better yet, lets have 3 more elections to give people time to 'practice' so we are certain they are making the choice they want to and we will only count the 3rd one? or take an average?

Im being silly.. but my point is- Jesus.. we can go on and on and on about this.. and it becomes a circus.. Just like everything else Americans seem to do.. and if your republican your going to justify any and all actions taken by the Bush folks to sway things in your direction and vice/v.. I just think there has to be a point where enough is enough..

Im completely neutral.. I felt and STILL feel that both candidates arent qualified to clean my apartment let alone run the country.. It was a circus to begin with.. and now we are going to tear the nation apart over this? Its just tearing me apart and im sure alot of other people who dont fall into this silly party loyalty will agree.. because at this point that is all its about.. silly loyalty at the expense of our country.. Each side wants to win.. Sure it exposes alot of flaws in how the process has been carried out over each election- and that needs to be addressed.. but this is all a surprise? now?

.. I do want to add that my opinion about the opposition to the manual recount is Bush folks seeing exaclty what I do.. that if Gore STILL comes out the loser in Florida after all is said and done, they will STILL find reason to not concede.. Typical AMerican style it will just go on and on and on nit picking every little detail.. How much has this cost us as taxpayers by the way?? Wouldnt even want to think about that aspect of this charade..

I understand that in some ways its fantastic to see how our system works and how concerned people are that we handle this with all options considered.. but how far does it go?

I just think if we start manual counting in FLorida, it will just open the flood gates to drag this on and on and on.. If you want that and feel that is a vital part of our system? well fine.. I disagree, and think its imperative to reach a decision ASAP..

... I will miss the volatility in the markets tho.. If you folks drag this on, a short seller like me can walk away a very happy person.. but this goes beyond my bank account unfortunately..
