1. Was Palm Beach County the only County in Florida that used the butterfly ballot? If not,why aren't problems simarlar to the Buchanan/Gore confusion hypothesis arising in other Counties?

2. Is it reasonable to conclude that Pat Buchanan reaped 3 times more votes (i.e 3,407) in Palm Beach County than in any other Florida County? If not, is there a compelling case to support that the majority of any wrongly cast votes, favoured either Mr. Bush or Mr. Gore?

3. How many overseas votes are anticipated?

Can anyone can direct me to the relevant posts or provide additional info? Thanks in anticipation!

Niceguy,

I don't think people know how to respond when you don't talk about AMD. <g>

To answer your questions....based upon what I have read or heard on tv:

1) As I understand it, the ballot used in PB county was one of a kind and was not used in other FL counties.

2) Yes, even Buchanan has said that he doesn't believe he could have gotten that many votes in one county, particularly PB county. The 3K votes were nearly 20% of his total vote count in FL......an unusually high percentage.

3) I heard 10k but I don't know the level of accuracy on this number.

niceguy, re: your questions on FL voting

To add to Ted's responses,

(1) I have not seen any indications a butterfly ballot was used elsewhere in FL. Ironic that a design intended to aid older voters (larger font) may have been more confusing.

(2) Buchanan votes in Palm Beach County may have been higher than elsewhere for several reasons: (i) greater independent/reform party registration; (ii) a relative in the area. It would be interesting to know the distribution of the ballots with multiple presidential votes that were discarded. This county needs some voter education...

(3) Overseas ballots received after election day in 1996 were reportedly about 2600. Presumably some and perhaps most of these have arrived by now and possibly been counted. EDIT: IIRC, about 10,000 overseas ballots were sent and 5,000 received to date with another 2,500 or so expected. Of course, there appear to be some concerns that overseas ballots are not reaching voters in time or at all. Hopefully this problem will be investigated and corrected prior to the next election.
