Steve & Tom,

I think the reason Reps got the control of Congress in 1994 was because of their "Contract with America". Republicans set forth certain goals and had them achieved during the initial two years of control. What they did not foresee was how really slick Bill Clinton turned out to be. A big contributor to his approval rating was also a booming economy and the lowest unemployment figures in years. Clinton era is coming to a close. It appears Bush is going to win the presidency. The biggest challenge for the Republican party in the next two years would be to act on its promises made during the campaign. If they achieve that, look for them to gain more seats in Congress. If deadlock in Congress continues, the Republican party stands to lose Congress in many many years to come. It is going to be an uphill battle for George W. but he is not as soft as his daddy, he is known to be a strong and convincing leader. For starters, he did all the firings during his dad's administration, since his father had no guts to do so himself. At any rate, the markets will continue to meander until next Friday.
