OT Just had to say that it's refreshing to hear a voice of calm and reason. Thanks for your post.

I agree with almost everything you said. But, I must say, out of all the elections I have participated in, there has never been so much of a difference between the two major canidates than in this election. Bush is locked into a major tax cut (although he may not get it now that the senate is so close), he is locked into allowing drilling for oil in Anwar and unlocking federal lands for logging, he is pro-life (or anit-abortion), and desire school vouchers (a device rejected in two state referendums on the state level) and school prayer. Gore will not veto only a smaller, targeted tax cut, defintiely will not open up Anwar, won't open federal lands for logging, is pro-choice, and will spend more at the federal level for schools rather than vouchers. These are just a few issues which are black and white.

Also, I don't believe the Gore camp mentioned legal battles first. I believe it was first announced by a lawyer for a private citizen. Now, the Bush camp will say that it was the Gore camp that prompted the action. But, both sides will claims whatever a private citizen does was at the direction of the party as if there are no independent thinking people in this country anymore.

And, althgouh mosty of my posts give the indicatin that I am a string democrat, I am not. I despise Gore almost as much as I do Bush. I lean democrat because the right wing scares the hell out of me and they control a great deal of the things that happen in the republican party.

Last, I agree with you that this is very entertaining and a great civics lesson. My children and my niece and nephew have learnd more about our constitution and our system of democracy due to this election than they would have learned out of any book.

New news--Bush campaign goofed! Deadline to request a hand-count in particular counties has no passed. They had 72 hours after the re-count had been certified by the individual county. That time has now passed. They left themselves with the injunction route as their only route in Florida. I said this morning before this just came out, that they had erred in strategy. I think it is going to come back to haunt them on this. But, they still have time for re-counts in WI, IA, NM, and OR.

Since you and i both find this pretty entertaining, here is a rather entertaining scenario.

1. Bush lost the right to ask for manual count in republican counties as time has expired pursuant to Fla. statute.

2. Bush loses injunction hearing in federal court on Monday.

3. Gore picks up sufficient votes due to the manual count in order to appear as the winner of Florida. Gore will have to pick up several thousand votes in order to survive the overseas vote talley but it is possible.

4. Bush requests an entire state re-vote due to the irregularities of the entire process that took place after the original election vote.

No. 4 is not a probable scenario but who knows. The scenarios are endless.

I agree with Nader that there isn't much difference between the two major parties.

How can you say this?

Republicans are for lower taxes for everybody. Democrats are only dragged into promising a tax cut for those who barely pay any taxes in the firtst place.

Republicans are for school choice, in the form of vouchers, the democrats subject all who cannot afford private schools to the public school system.

Republicans are anti-litigation. Democrats want to sue their way to their political goals (example: tobacco, and also encourage all to sue to practically anything. Why do trial lawyers support democrats overwhelmingly?

Republicans are pro-business. Democrats are anti-business.

Republicans are anti-union. Democrats are pro-union.

Republicans are pro second amendment. Democrats are willing to subvert this and other amendments.

Republicans are pro first amendment rights for everyone. Democrats are pro first amendment rights for only that agree with their politically correct views.

Republicans believe in personal responsibility. Democrats want the government to take all responsibility.

There is plenty more. You get the picture.
