jmac - without engaging you on the substance, I just wish to point out that CNN has been making the point repeatedly during the last 1-1/2 hours I've been watching that results have been certified so far in only 53 counties. The Democrats have requested manual recounts in 4. There are 10 possible left uncertified in which requests for manual recounts can be requested. No one talks about the States in which electoral votes are unlikely to be changed but recounts could affect the popular vote. Hre in NYC numerous bad votes are always cast; others are prevented; registrations are screwed up; etc. If we really looked closely throughout the country, we might even reverse the present situation - Bush popular, Gore electoral. I hope I live long enough to give serious historians time to write and research on this election. Perhaps the Constitutional Amendment someone ought to propose is a universal system and ballot for Federal offices which should be Federal, not State, prerogative. This is both fascinating and scary; we will have to wait until the 2002 elections to break the essential Congressional tie and alleviate what will undoubtedly be a stalemated 2 years. Hopefully this week the market will realize that stalemate is good - either that or will realize that Qcom is so good that its rise will offset all my other losses in everything I own. Do prayers help? John

Jmac,

I have to dispute a few things and clarify some others. The risk of posting a political opinion is that one side or the other wants to suck you in.

>>there has never been so much of a difference between the two major candidates than in this election.<< POOP!

1964 Goldwater vs Johnson
1968 Humphrey vs Nixon (remember the war & convention)
1972 Nixon vs McGovern (remember the war & watergate)
1980 Carter vs Reagan
These candidates had major ideological differences.

In 1992 Clinton realized he had to distance the party from the far left and he won. Since then the republicans have been trying to distance themselves from the religious right. Did you hear Colin Powell speak at the convention? He sounded much more like a democrat than republican. Did you notice how the right to life rhetoric was muffled? Both parties are moving toward the middle.

We shouldn't let organizations do our thinking for us. I am an environmentalist, but I can't support the Sierra Club. I am a hunter and own lots of guns, but I can't support the NRA. I don't believe in abortion, but I am pro-choice.

>> he is locked into allowing drilling for oil in Anwar<< I believe that ANWR should be opened for drilling. The oil companies have done an excellent job of producing oil on the north slope with minimum damage to the environment. The fact that it is called the "Artic national wildlife refuge" makes it sound like a beautiful spot, it isn't. It is an artic desert. I have been there. It can be developed responsibly and we need the oil!

>>he is locked into unlocking federal lands for logging<< Do you live in a wood frame house? Do you believe only private lands should be logged? Federal forests should be harvested in a responsible manner.

>>These are just a few issues which are black and white.<< There are very few issues that I find black & white. I am resistant to party line, group think, us-them sort of mentalities.

I appreciate your willingness to stand up to dominant views expressed on this thread. I have to deal with each issue separately.

Pete
