Yes, the unions performed a very important function in many areas of our nation and it's industrial development. Safety in the workplace, etc... Unfortunately, too many unions now stand for protecting the status quo and limiting production (mostly by padding the workforce). You can perform the work of 10 union workers with about 6 or 7 non-union workers any day of the week. And boy oh boy are they afraid of competition. Been there, done that. Sad, but true.
