JohnD, the Republicans had every opportunity to request a hand count there under Florida law if they so chose.. but they chose not to.. because it would shoot their own argument down that the election was fine as it was and the hand counts were unnecessary. Now.. as i understand it, since that county is certified.. its too late to ask for one there.. but there are still 10-13 other counties that havent been certified, and the Democrats are saying that if the republicans want hand counts there.. by all means ask for 1.

The Republicans have lost the tactical battle today.. as well as the public relations battle. I believe CNN had a poll on tonight which said the American public supported the manual hand count position the democrats requested, and now with the embarrassing revelation Bush signed this manual recount bill in Texas which stated manual recounts were the preferred method over machine counts.. that argument they make about hand counts not being the best way to do it is as Shakespeare said, "A wind full of sound and fury, signifying nothing"

John,

I think you are confused:

Mike Langton, chairman of the northeast Florida Gore campaign, reacted angrily to news of the 26,000 nullified votes. He said he had learned of them too late to ask for a manual recount, which under Florida law must be requested within 72 hours of the election.

He said Stafford had told him only 200 to 300 votes were nullified. Johnson said Langton had misunderstood what Stafford had said.

"I sure as hell would have requested a manual recount if I had known 27,000 votes were nullified," Langton said. "We were harmed because we didn't find out in time to ask for a recount."

The Dems definitely did want a recount in Duval County.
