Jill,

You make an excellent point. Palm Beach County is about to embark upon a method of tallying votes that differs from the remainder of the state, with consequences that may alter a statewide election (i.e. determine the recipient of the 25 electoral votes).

Unfortunately, this mess is headed to the Courts.

It may be quite legal, while at the same time completely unfair. The Democrats will say the Republicans should have climbed in the slime & requested recounts themselves.

By taking the high road, they may have handed the presidency to Gore & an apples to oranges vote tally will be the final recount that got Gore the numbers he has been pursuing all along.

At this point I hope that Bush & the Republicans decide it is in the best interests of the country to avoid this street fight & concede the election for the good of the country...... IMVHO, there is nothing good that could come from joining Gore, Daley & the Democrats in the street fight. Neither Bush nor Gore will be able to run this country effectively in any event.

"How can you have one method of counting..."

Take a look at the following article:

cnn.com

...........................................................
Florida's top election official warned the state's counties and the presidential candidates Saturday against prolonging the recount, saying the system is about to "melt down."

Bob Crawford, who replaced Gov. Jeb Bush as commissioner of Florida's Canvassing Commission, said Saturday that if a county misses the state's deadline for certifying results, the entire county's vote will be thrown out.

"The statute is very clear that if a county's results are not to us by 5 p.m. Tuesday we shall ignore that county's vote, and the counties need to be very aware of that," Crawford told reporters. "Candidates asking for recounts need to be aware of that."

Crawford also stressed that he believed the system is being pressed to its limits.
..........................................................

I guess the whole thing is going to hinge on a Bill Clinton style definition of the word "recount." By law each county is required to submit an official recount. The numbers we have been given so far are all unofficial numbers gathered by the press. Once the numbers are handed in on Tuesday, it will be up to anyone who objects (i.e. the Republicans) to take court-action to try to invalidate it. Perhaps all the talk of letting Palm Beach residents vote again, and the demonstrations were all just a smoke-screen to keep the Republicans off guard while the "Daley Bunch" pursued this strategy. No wonder Al Gore is distancing himself from the operation. Very depressing. Stealing the White House in broad daylight.

I stayed up all night watching the PB debacle. The term "recount," is a misrepresentation. It was nothing less than a "RECLASSIFICATION" of invalid ballots to make them appear to express someone's intent. The Palm Beach board even changed their standards during the process and had to start over again. There are no standards.

They decided that if ONE corner of a four-corner tab was broken, that was "reclassified," as a vote. So, if somebody rested the punch on that chad even briefly, whether inadvertently or decided at the last minute not to vote, the Democrat PB board decided that they had voted.

According to the Democrat PB board, the "act" of voting now has eliminated the "act" requirement. Everyone knows that the ballot be punched, it's only common sense. Everyone knows that they have to look at their ballot afterwards, too. The solemnity of the occasion, done only once every four years, demands it. This is a total travesty.
