"This is incorrect. Profusion has two FSBs in the system supporting four processors each, for a total of eight processors. (There is also a third FSB, but that's only for PCI hubs.)"

Umm, let's see. You state, and correctly I might add, that there are two FSBs with up to 8 Xeons. I point out, and correctly I might add, that there are up to 4 Xeons on one FSB, since 8 divided by 2 is 4. I wasn't looking at the total number of precessors as much as I was looking at the total load on an FSB. Which is why I didn't mention the FSB dedicated to I/O. Sorry if I confused you.

As far as the TPC-C rating of the Alpha ES-40, I wouldn't cling to that as an example of how poor the EV-6 bus is on SMP. The ES-40 uses a chipset designed for the 21164 and is notorious for poor memory throughput with the 21264. It was originally designed as a stopgap, but with the Compaq buyout development of the replacement was slow in coming.

<Tench: This sounds like pure sour grapes to me. Intel is reporting excellent growth in the server market, including 2-way SMP. Make no mistake, the slip in the 760MP chipset is indeed a big setback for AMD.>

There's a huge market for SMP, both 2-way and higher. 2-way is amazingly popular for web/net-servers and AMD is indeed missing out on a huge growth area by not being able to supply 2-way SMP.

In addition, I believe it would make a significant impact on the perception of AMD. I know that I certainly hesitate, when I buy the very top-end of what a company can deliver; I have more confidence, if the company is capable of delivering more than I need - it gives a feeling of a good safety margin.

Of course, that's just me and the rest of the world may not behave like I do (it's happened before ;)).
