Hi Gang! long time, no post.

I've learned to reserve my political comments. However, I felt this short story shouldn't go unpublished.

This is the God's honest truth:

I live in the inner city of Philadelphia. Its rich history and diversity are what convince me to continue to live here.
But doing that does come with consequences.

Of the potential 750 registered voters in my area 55 are registered Republican. I and my wife are 2 of those Republicans (moderates/Pro Choice.)

Yesterday I was volunteering time to install plantings and bulbs and general clean up in our public park across the street. My good neighbor and I worked together digging a hole for one of the new Southern Magnolias. As we dug he complained how hard the ground was to dig with a plain shovel. Meanwhile we continued our week long discussion on the election and its outcome. He said to me "Tim, I still can't believe you voted for Bush don't you realize you voted along with all of those Rural Ninnies? After all it's a well accepted notion that the more intellectual crowds tend to live in the urban areas." I replied "Now John, you've just crossed the line on intellect. I suggest you develop a new tangent to make you point. That is utterly stupid of you to say that."

The conversation went on and on as we dug and he basically did some back-peddling.

As he was ready to give up on digging the hole out of frustration. I asked if he would like me to show him how to make this hole we're digging a lot easier?

I pulled my 15lb tunneling bar out of my pick-up truck and began softening the soil in order to remove it with ease.

His last comment to me on the subject was "What do you know?I guess you rural ninnies aren't dumb afterall..."

Thank you very much!

I'm certain I'll never change John's view but he's still my friend. We actually fight for our neighborhood on the same side at our local level and that's far more important to me. Whoever ends up in office, we will continue to be friends. But man, it does make you pause and wonder.

Is this short conversation a reflection of our entire country? I sure hope not.
