<andreas: I was very surprised that Meyer made such a strong statement that he expected Clawhammer to be three times as fast as a 1 GHz Athlon (classic, I presume). He must be very confident about it.>

But what does 3x as fast mean? NVIDIA proclaimed their GeForce2 to be twice as fast as their successor. Intel could well claim that their P4 is e.g. 30% faster than a PIII (the usual 1.4GHz to 1.0GHz comparison).

AMD's claim could be based on a similar, theoretical number. We know that the Hammer family will have pipeline changes. There are rumors that it will have SMT. This two combined could well result in 3x the performance of a 1GHz Athlon... under some, controlled circumstances.

Hmm, I finished listening the conference telecast this morning. I haven't see the following noted on this thread before:

In one of the charts that was charting the AMD processor performance vs the "Moor's law" curve (showing AMD processors ahead of the curve)- the chart had the P4 as a blue "Box" on the curve showing up at around 12/00.

At the same place the AMD processor was shown slightly above the P-4.

The same chart had the "sledgehammer" on it.

This chart was drawn in proportion to a 1Ghz Athlon performance. Anyway, the Sledgehammer was shown at 3X the 1GHz Athlon, but some where around June/July 2002!!

I don't think that Derk specifically mentioned that he expected clawhammer to be 3X 1GHz Athlon. According to this chart, that would be Sledgehammer around the middle of 2002!

Some other observations:

* Rambus seems to have been completely dropped- even from being mentioned in the roadmaps (not too surprising). Dirk specifically mentioned "leveraging" DDR and LDT in the "hammer" series.

* No Multi die processors were mentioned. I don't think that the initial Sledgehammer series would be multi die. They specifically mentioned Sledgehammer for 4 and 8 way systems (using LDT). No mention of multiple cores/processor.

* Palomino was NOT demoed. I found that surprising. Herb (I think) stated that Power Now and 760MP with Athlons was being demoed in the "hall". No mention of Palomino.
