TechieGuy-alt:

* No Multi die processors were mentioned. I don't think that the initial Sledgehammer series would be multi die. They specifically mentioned Sledgehammer for 4 and 8 way systems (using LDT). No mention of multiple cores/processor.

From recent AMD patents, it looks like they might be doing Simultaneous Multi-Threading. I don't think I ever saw the original quote on "multiple cores per die/processor" (or whatever), but there has been substantial speculation that the reference was in reality to SMT.

I seem to remember Dirk saying clawhammer would be at 3x the performance of a 1GHz Athlon at introduction (Q1'01), but since I don't have access to sound here I can't check...

That graph with 1GHzAthlon normalized performance doesn't look good - you are absolutely correct there. The pink dot of the Hammer family is clearly situated around 2Q02 at ~3x performance.

However, a couple of slides later:

"Clawhammer: Samples Q4’01, production shipments Q1’02"
"Sledgehammer: Samples Q1’02, production shipments Q2’02"

Does seem a bit contradictory...

TG, some comments about your observations on the meeting:

I don't think that Derk specifically mentioned that he expected clawhammer to be 3X 1GHz Athlon. According to this chart, that would be Sledgehammer around the middle of 2002!

Are you sure about this? IIRC Meyed said explicitly that Clawhammer would be three times as fast as a classic 1 GHz Athlon (in fact I copied this "live" to the thread). And on the roadmap the pink dot is somewhat ahead of 3.0 so this could be in line with further speed developments. But since nobody (including Meyer) can accurately say today how many times Clawhammer or Sledgehammer will be faster than today's Athlon I think this was a very bold statement. I hope it was not something of the kind of "1.5 GHz in Q1".

Palomino was NOT demoed. I found that surprising. Herb (I think) stated that Power Now and 760MP with Athlons was being demoed in the "hall". No mention of Palomino.

Since PowerNow! isn't supported by Athlons/Thunderbirds it must have been a Palomino -- unless AMD demoed K6-2+ which I think is highly unlikely (unless there are serious issues with Palomino or AMD wanted to take all the buzz to the Comdex).

BTW, what was your general impression of the meeting?

Andreas

Hmm. Well, Athlon = Palomino, but thanks for clarifying that Herb only explicitly stated 760MP and soforth. I think I'm going to update my notes as soon as I reinstall my PC. :)
