Just got called on my use of the word 'indian' ... well there is nothing derogatory here whatsoever, the term is a great joke on Colón/Columbus, who insisted to his grave that he had found Asia ... an old friend of mine, very bright and activist, has a card stating under his name 'Indio Tzeltal' ... which is spitting in the face of the Paz y Justicia types who do use it in a derogatory fashion, but just guess on whom is the joke.

'First nations' just doesn't cut it, as they weren't 'first nations', man is a mobile creature and the various groups resident in each area on european contact cannot possibly maintain that they are exclusively descendants of the first humans there ... warfare and migration have been human traits a long time, everywhere ... in spanish 'indígena' has become the politically correct term, well that's all very well but where do you draw the line? ... is a person born in a place not native to it? ... the words native and nation share a common root in latin, it means 'birth', and closely related is the 'gena' from indígena, it means 'born' .... there's a lot more than semantics in this.

"indian status shall hereunder be granted in perpetuity" There is a law against perpetuities in Canada.

I was at a Reserve last year that was suffering from abject poverty yet they had a KFC there. While enjoying our snack packs we were surrounded by a group of hungry kids watching us. It is pretty hard to eat under those circumstances, we surrendered our snack packs and a few chocolate bars and hit the road.

I still can see their blue and green eyes looking at us. And there you go, that is how it changes.
