Thus far the prospect of a long drawn out battle over the election is having a big impact on the market. I think in this case the impact is warranted as it might be the final nail in the coffin that changes the psyche of our consumer driven economy:

one year ago - upbeat consumers and upbeat market, country can do no wrong
within the past year:
fed raises interest rates - consumers on buying binge during first rate increases, buying begins to temper, recent increases begin to have impact

tech market swoon of march to july - break in bubble erases wealth of speculators

oil prices increase - takes money out of consumer pockets, especially discretionary spending of low to middle income people

protracted election - wipes out billions in market wealth, also produces a feeling of malaise over the country - could be the blow that takes consumers from positive outlook to negative outlook
