So, let me get this straight: Dwight Eisenhower
was fit to be President, George Marshall was fit to
be Secretary of State, but not Colin Powell. Also,
in case you missed it, all three were more diplomats
than frontline generals. Not exactly the same thing as
proposing the nomination of Storming Norman for the
job.

>> Condaleeza Rice is an admirable woman but not fit to run our foreign policy. She's being used and she doesn't even know it. Or does she? I don't know her well enough to say anything more. Colin Powell also doesn't seem like he'd be a very good Secretary of State. <<

Who are we kidding? Listen, let's look at this from a business perspective. Consider Compaq and Dell as an example. They are engaged in a vicious battle for market share. For years, they have each resorted to slashing box prices in order to capture market share from each other. They are willing to slash prices even if it means losing money per box. Gasoline stations have employed similar practices in the past. You get the point. It's a common business practice. When either of these parties appoint undeserving, unqualified minorities to highly visible positions of authority, they are in fact, "slashing prices" to "gain market share" from their competitor; the other party. And like any highly competitive business, they will do this even though it is actually a losing proposition for them, and even though they know a more highly qualified, deserving white person is available.

Re. ``the old days when the Groton boys went on
to lead the world'' sounds to me like the elitism
of limousine riding liberals. The kind that speaks
lofty worlds about the need to promote minorities,
but as soon as a black woman comes to threaten
this world, ``she does not have the right stuff''
(read clor of skin and gender). As far as I am concerned,
except for Bob Rubin and Lloyd Bentsen, the entire Clinton
administration has been manned by liars and nonentities
(Janet Reno qualifies under both headings).
