LOL Jim M1 to offer CDMA customers free handsets and retention of current tariff plans for move to new GSM network at end 2001 SINGAPORE, 13 November 2000 – M1 has delivered on its promise to its more than 50,000 CDMA customers today by announcing an attractive package to make up for the eventual loss of the CDMA spectrum to the national 3G spectrum requirements. M1 has decided to build a brand new state-of-the-art GSM network, expected to be ready by the end of next year, to replace the CDMA network. M1 will then migrate all CDMA customers to the new network but will allow them to retain their CDMA tariff plans for as long as they remain on the network. In addition, CDMA customers moving to the new network will be able to return their CDMA handsets in exchange for free GSM handsets. They will also have the option of retaining their CDMA phone numbers. More details will be released nearer the date of the switchover. Customers will of course get to enjoy all the other benefits of the GSM technology, such as autoroaming and short message service. They will be using an ultra modern network that is primed for the future. M1 will announce details of its investment in the new GSM network at a later date. Commenting on the value-packed deal for CDMA customers, M1’s Chief Executive Officer, Neil Montefiore, said: “The closure next year of the CDMA network results from developments that are not within our control. We do however have a responsibility to our customers and we have pledged that our decision going forward would be based on what is most beneficial to them. Having looked at the various options, I am very confident that our CDMA customers are going to be absolutely delighted with this offer. It is a totally painless package that has all the pluses built in and no minuses to speak of.” For the very economical CDMA tariff rates that they will continue to pay, affected customers will be getting the latest GSM technology, one that will propel them into the 3G age at the appropriate time. It is truly a value proposition that only a strongly customer-focused company like M1 can give to its customers,’ Mr Montefiore added. M1, Singapore's most exciting and innovative mobile, IDD and paging service provider, was launched in April 1997. Since then, it has made significant inroads into the local mobile communications market, gaining considerable brand presence and market share. M1 aims to be the leader in personal voice and data communications, focusing on value, quality and customer service. Note to Editors M1 launched Singapore’s only CDMA service on 1 June 1998. CDMA or Code Division Multiple Access is a US digital cellular technology known for its high voice quality. CDMA is positioned as a no-frills, economical service for those who simply require a basic mobile voice facility. Customers are charged very affordable airtime rates of 18 cents (peak), 8 cents (off-peak) and 4 cents (super off-peak). As CDMA occupies a spot on the proposed 3G spectrum that will be auctioned off to telecom operators in 2001, M1 is required by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore to move out of the spectrum. The challenge for M1 has been to come up with an alternative service that combines the most benefits and the least inconvenience for its existing CDMA customers. m1.com.sg
