NEW YORK (CBS.MW) - Sycamore Networks shares rose 2.8 percent during Tuesday's after-hours session after the company reported earnings that were better than expected.
Prior to the market's close, Sycamore shares rose 6.5 percent.

Also, Network Appliance and BEA Systems reported quarterly financial results after the closing bell.

As Island ECN's most active issue, Sycamore (SCMR: news, msgs) shares rose $1.80 to $66.24. Shares closed up $3.94 to $64.44.

Sycamore Networks reported first-quarter pro forma net income of $6 million, or 2 cents a share, compared with a net loss of $4.1 million, or 2 cents a share, during the same quarter last year.

Analysts surveyed by First Call expected earnings of 1 cent a share.

Revenue was $120.4 million compared with $19.5 million during the same quarter last year.

Sycamore is a maker of optical networking products.

Network Appliance (NTAP: news, msgs) shares fell 7.8 percent despite the company's better-than-expected earnings. The fall has erased most of the company's regular session gains of 14 percent.

Network Appliance reported second-quarter pro forma net income of $36.6 million, or 10 cents a share, compared with $16.1 million, or 5 cents a share, during the same quarter last year.

Analysts surveyed by First Call expected earnings of 9 cents a share, on average.

Revenue was $260.8 million compared with $124.7 million during the same quarter last year.

Network Appliance shares fell $7.75 to $88.75 after closing up $11.75 to $96.25.

Network Appliance is a network file storage and content delivery company.

BEA Systems (BEAS: news, msgs) reported third-quarter net income of $31.3 million, or 7 cents a shares, compared with $10.4 million, or 3 cents a share, during the same quarter last year.

Analysts surveyed by First Call expected earnings of 6 cents a share, on average.

Revenue was $224 million compared with $126.5 million during the same quarter last year.

Analysts expected revenue of $207.9 million, on average.

BEA shares fell 19 cents to $17.88 on Island after closing up $7.95 to $70.94.

BEA is an e-business infrastructure software company.

As I listend to that I imagined sitting in on some of my local council meetings etc. It scares me to think that these folks are going to determine our next President based on whatever standard they apply to hand recount these ballots. I cannot imagine my county having that power. That would truly be scary knowing the people we have here in office.

I am certain that most of them are trying very hard under an extreme worldwide microscope and they are wondering why on earth they ever wanted to do this job.

It is pressure I would not want.
