I think many people (mostly on the left) thought that the East-West conflict was just one huge "misunderstanding", and only if the 2 sides talked more, this misunderstanding would just go away.

I think this idle talk is what is now called a "peace process". There were other terms even more bizarre like "peace activist", but let's not get into that.

The problem is that just like there was no misunderstanding between East and West, there is no misunderstanding between Arabs and Jews. What solved the East-West conflict is that one side eventually changed their intentions, and the conflict went away. There was nothing more to talk about. The "peace process" was no longer needed.

If you take the "peace process" during Nixon and Carter years, it was as much of a joke as the the idle talk between Jews and Palestinians lead by Clinton. I find it amusing that you find it to be a triumph of foreign policy.
