Raymnond, I personally have not been reading Gilder for months. as a matter of fact, I have walked a line on AVNX because the optical sector is expensive and the trend in the market is still down for valuations. My contentious attitude was a result of what I feel are attacks on my post that have no merit.

My positive overall opinion of AVNX as a company is a result of its customer base and the growth wthin that customer base. SCMR announced numbers last night projecting 200% growth YoY. CSCO announced that they expect optical sales in the vicinity of 3-7 billion, a massive increase from present numbers.

Ray,

This stock is substantially lower than when Gilder "touted" it, and weren't you the one wanrning all of us about Extreme Network about a year ago? That is one of the few stocks that has actually increased several multiples this year, is showing rocketing profits now, and has stayed multiples higher from before last Spring's correction.

Traditional valuations are one thing, but you cannot predict with any certainty more than 6 months out with companieslike these. And big money is made when they exceed them, like the great ones do.

Why beat these issues to death when nobody knows everything?

Avanex Corporation (ticker: AVNX, exchange: NASDAQ) News Release - 15-Nov-2000

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Avanex Receives Patent for DWDM Technology

FREMONT, Calif., Nov. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Avanex Corporation (Nasdaq: AVNX), the global provider of photonic processors that enable next generation performance for optical communications networks, today announced that it has been issued a U.S. patent for its proprietary dense wavelength multiplexing (DWDM) process. Dr. Simon Cao, Chief Technology Officer for the company, is the inventor on the patent.

Patent # 6,130,971 "Fiber Optic Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexer with a Phase Differential Method of Wavelength Separation Utilizing a Polarization Beam Splitter and a Nonlinear Interferometer" was issued to Avanex by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Oct. 10.

"This is a highly significant patent for Avanex," company Chairman and CEO Walter Alessandrini said. "The process invented by Dr. Simon Cao is a key enabling technology in Avanex's revolutionary photonic processing solutions. Award of the patent illustrates the unique nature of Avanex's approach, protects valuable intellectual property and establishes a formidable competitive barrier." Dr. Cao now holds five U.S. patents, with 33 more pending.

The process invented by Dr. Cao enables the splitting of an optical signal into an extraordinarily high number of wavelengths, each capable of carrying a stream of data. Avanex has achieved 1,000 wavelengths in laboratory experiments, versus the current commercial maximum of 160.

The patented DWDM process also can be easily modified to allow channels to be dropped or added, which addresses a major obstacle to a fully all-optical communications network. The patent application notes that the material required to manufacture and implement the process is readily available, making it cost-effective.

Avanex's PowerMux(TM) Wavelength Channel Processor, which is based on the patented DWDM process, is shipping commercially.

About Avanex

Yesterday, over at his GTR forum, Gilder more than adequately countered the charges raised by Crowe. GG says that he has submitted a response to the WSJ (stay tuned).

Funny, you never head Crowe crow about GG when LVLT was *on* the GTR List!

GG said that he absolutely does not solicit or take money to list a company on his list. Period. An absurd charge.
He did not bill Crowe, as Crow maintains.
As to the technology disagreement, GG says that the industry does not yet fully grasp or agree with his vision of an AVNX WDM future. An honest disagreement. To say that GG doesn't know what he's talking about, because they disagree, makes Crowe look like a hot-head, IMO.

He seems to have a large plate of crow in front of him.
