Machines were brought in to SPEED things up. They are much faster than hand counting.

As for accuracy, machines are fanatics, they only "understand" black and white. Whenever there is a machine ballot count, a number of ballots are "tossed out" because the machine can't for whatever reason read the ballot. Most of these ballots are none the less still valid. Typically the number of thrown out ballots is less than the margin of victory, thus no recount is needed. In this case however, the error is larger than the margin of victory so a hand count should be used to verify the validity of "tossed out" ballots. If those ballots are good they need to be counted.

The market might be volatile because of the uncertainty. But I think in the end this will be a good learning experience for our country. We have a chance at this point in time to solve some, possibly serious, shortcomings in our democratic system at a time when there are no crises.

Just think, Grandma may very well choose YOUR president. Hope her eyeglass prescription isnt TOO outdated. haha JDN

Finally, i'm on topic.

Bill Joy was just on CNN making the points that i've been making here: certain counties in Florida are systematically undercounted due to different types of machines being used in different counties. He said the best solution would be to count by machine, and by hand, especially the ballots that the machine finds no vote for president. He said that he supports Gore, but that he and a friend at Sun who supports Bush both agreed as to the best way to count the votes.

Meanwhile Bush signed a law in Texas which calls for hand counts to be preferred over machine counts in close elections. The law also establishes that both pregnant and dimpled chads can be counted as reflecting the will of the voter and therefore counted as votes.

Now he's arguing in court that just such a law is unfair and unconstitutional. Here is a man who clearly will say anything to be elected President. And the irony is that his supporters are the one accusing the Democrats of trying to steal the election.

Why not just count the votes as accurately as possible and then determine the winner? Or better yet why not throw out Florida's vote as inconclusive?
