Ridiculous. either the punched out part is out or it isn't...

Come on, Freeus, can't it be a little bit pregnant?...or is there no such thing as a chad being a little bit pregnant?...is a dimpled chad bigger or smaller than a pregnant chad?...

Question: What is the gestation period of a pregnant chad?...

Answer: Depends on who is handling the delivery....jj

You say it's ridiculous, and on the surface it may seem so with all the talk of chads, etc. But the whole point of the exercise is to establish a fair and accurate counting of the votes. There's nothing ridiculous about that.

There are observers from both parties at the recounts. This is entirely fair. It means that the chance of a questionable mark or punch going to either candidate is equal.

The machines have been described as having a 2-5% error rate in reading the ballots. If this is true, manual recounts state-wide would clearly be needed to establish the legitimacy of the count, since the vote totals differ by much less than the error rate.

I am certain if the situation were reversed, GW Bush campaign would have exercised their right under Florida law to ask for a manual recount. They would certainly cite the same arguments I have throughout this rather interesting discussion on the Porch.

If a full state recount + overseas shows Bush the winner, he will be our president and I will respect that. I think the only real reason Republicans are against this simple, legal course of action is because they expect to lose.
