Gore is clearly swinging for the fences...

Joe,

< ... I completely fail to see what impressed you about Gore speech.>

I didn't say anything about being impressed about Gore's speech, did I? Let me be totally brutal here - I find both the candidates terribly unimpressive, unispiring, and lacking much in the way of being leaders. I refuse to defend either candidates. So, let's get that part straightened out.

<Gore lost the 1st count, 2nd count, he is still behind after 1 county hand recount, he is about to lose overseas ballots. >

I have talked to many people about this issue in the last few days (obviously!) and I find that most people - republicans and democrats alike - think that hand counting is not a bad idea given how error prone the current process has been. Think of it - we have a counting system whose accuracy is not sufficient to determine this close an election.

<Now with his back against the wall about to lose it all, the time is running out, he offers to play the whole counting game over to determine who the real winner is.>

You would do the same thing if you were Al Gore, wouldn't you?

<Not only he didn't put anything online, and ask Bush to put everything online, he actually sneakily slipped in 1 county to his recount condition that is officially off the table (Dade).>

So, you are scared that Bush has to put everything online, i.e., Bush has a chance of losing the election if the count is more accurate and so he should not agree?

I think that is a bad argument to make, don't you think?

<Gore is a desperate man at this hour trying desperate measures, anything to delay or reverse the inevitable.>

Gore is clearly a desperate man given that he is behind but I fail to see how one can conclude the result is "inevitable" given that this whole thing seems like such a mess.

Chuck

Joe,
Did a little figuring based on the absentee ballots already in. 59-37 Bush. Taken over say 7,000 votes that's 4130-2590= 1540 more for Bush added to the already 300 lead he has gives a margin of 1840 votes. You think that will be enough to get Gore to throw in the towel?

Jim

BTW, I fully expect some absentee ballot hanky panky, smudged postmarks etc...

Joe, Re..You know that I very much respect your opinion on matters AMD related, but I completely fail to see what impressed you about Gore speech.<<<

I do not know about Chuck, but I also felt Al had the better position; And I would hardly be called a fan of Al's.
There were several points Al made that made sense. 1) Count all of the state of Fla. and no more lawsuits. It makes a lot of sense; with one caveat. Count all of the state, both republican and dem. counties and eliminate all excuses of unfair count. If the rep. can't cheat as much as the dem.s are, that is their problem. After the county votes are in and certified, then open overseas ballots.

2) No more lawsuits by either party. Fine with me. All of the other states, Wi. New Mex. Iowa and Or. all had bigger margins than Fla. plus if GW loses Fla. he would have to win every other state. Highly unlikely and Bush would be seen as the one dragging the election out. Why not bet on a hand you are winning so far. Even if GW loses, he will be seen as a gracious loser and have a good chance of beating Al in 2004, especially if we have a recession before then. Also AL won't get a lot done because both houses will be rep.

3) I think it is a good idea for both sides to come together, get this resolved, and let us get on with our life. Having the loser back the winner would help immeasurably and it would be good politics.
