Lorne, statistics and probabilities is an area I handle quite well. And I excelled in Mathematics.

However, an election cannot be based on the probabilities that some voters would have voted for one candidate over another. Unless you want to determine the election by psychics who can read voters intention, we must rely on the actual votes that are properly cast. You cannot go back after the fact and say, "Well, I really wanted to vote for the other guy."

As for the Buchanan votes, there are two explanations, IMO.

1) I read somewhere that in a recent election in that same part of Florida, Buchanan had obtained 9000 votes. He only received 6000 votes this time around. Therefore, we can't dismiss the possibility that some voters in the area like him.

2) A lot of Americans (Democrats) were disenchanted with the current administration. It could very well be that some of them intentionally showed their displeasure with this administration by intentionally spoiling their ballots. And what better message to send to this administration than by voting for Buchanan, someone who is a total opposite.
