The American Conservative Union (ACU) has filed a complaint with the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) charging that Handgun Control Inc. made illegal campaign contributions to Al Gore’s presidential campaign and several Democratic Senate campaigns. “We believe it’s time for them to be called into account,” said David Keene, ACU chairman, noting that Handgun Control Inc. “is a corporation and is prohibited from contributing anything of value to a federal candidate.” Although the ACU didn’t have figures available to show how much it believes the antigun lobbying group kicked in for favored political candidates, it did say that in the case of Rep. Bill McCollum, R-Fla., who resigned his seat to run as the GOP Senate candidate, at least $250,000 was spent to defeat him. ACU charged Handgun Control’s Website amounts to an expenditure because it expressly advocated the defeat of GOP Senate candidates as well as presidential nominee George W. Bush. ACU also objected to press conferences hosted by Handgun Control on behalf of several candidates as violating FEC rules. Handgun Control makes no secret of its positions and its opposition to particular candidates. One of the ads featured activist and movie star Martin Sheen criticizing Bush for his stand on gun issues and was launched with “an initial buy of several hundred thousand dollars,” according to the antigun group. Earlier expenditures for ads against Bush amounted to “$1.4 million — a record for the group,” according to Handgun Control. ACU also alleges that the campaigns receiving the contributions have not reported them, a violation of FEC rules. A similar complaint by the ACU against Virginia Democratic Sen. Charles Robb’s campaign and the National Council for Senior Citizens resulted in a citation against the Robb campaign and a $12,000 fine for the seniors group. insightmag.com
