Didn't need them anyway, except for appearance. Could have just walked into Baghdad...

Jim,

That's right for arms support but we needed them for political support. We were being portrayed in the third world as being the big bully attacking the little guy...forget that Iraq was going after Kuwait. We countered by saying that Iraq was a threat to Mideast peace.

However when the allies began to back away, it looked like we were fighting only to protect our own concerns and that we were getting off bashing the little guy. World public opinion began to go against us and we had to pull back.

I think that was part of the reason for Bush losing to Clinton....of course the major part of it was "its the economy, stupid!".
