Law is whatever a society says it is. Society is a social compact

Well, my oh my how quickly you change your tune.... From following a "higher standard" to now discussing the TRUE derivation of our laws. (Unfortunately, your views differ with the writers of the constitution who considered certain human rights to be "inalienable", or derived by virtue of our being human beings.

Now the 14th amendment is may or may not be "natural law". But regardless of its derivation it guarantees equal protection under the law, regardless of whether one is republican or democrat, male or female, white, black, or purple.

So here we have Al Gore winning Palm Beach, but running a close race in the state of Florida. So he demands a manual recount in a few select democratic strongholds in order to attempt to put himself "over the top".

And the Palm Beach canvassing board obliges him, DESPITE the fact that he more than beat Bush in that county. And despite the fact that they had to BREAK the precedent they had established just two months ago when that black female republican candidate lost by a mere 11 votes and THEY DENIED HER A MANUAL RECOUNT in an election that pertained to their own county, not the entire state.

That is hypocrisy at it's upmost. And at its heart, there lies the VERY REASON that Gore's request for a manual recount is unjustifiable.

Ignore the fact that the ballot was designed by a democrat and approved by both parties. All we have to know is that in Palm Beach, THERE HAS BEEN NO STANDARD TO DETERMINE WHO DESERVES A MANUAL RECOUNT.

That's why you should care. If the next president of the United States is going to be chosen, it can not be as a result of arbitrary election gimmicks by one party or another. They CANNOT apply one standard for not permitting a recount in one election, and then completely reverse that decision by permitting a manual recount in this one. Especially when the earlier election was FAR CLOSER than even this one.

Manually recounting Palm Beach is unfair to ALL OF US who cast our votes properly, whether we live in Florida or any other state in the nation.
