Mark,

I tried out the Nomad at a local computer retailer.

It is huge in comparison to the Treo and would not fit in any pocket, whereas the Treo fits easily into a shirt pocket. The Nomad player looks like an over-sized CD player.

I also experimented with the fast forward control and it definitely does not skip forward within the track being played. It simply jumps to the next track.

If it has the capability to play speech at an accelerated rate it was certainly not evident from the controls. But I doubt that anyone would care very much about such a feature. It has no application for music playing, and for speech recording and playback there are many cheaper alternatives on the market in pure dictation equipment.

Since the Treo will likely be repackaged by PC manufacturers to conform to their specific product line identity I think that we will see many interesting variants on the basic silver box design. I imagine that a translucent plastic case with rounded corners (for design as well as impact resistance) would be a big seller.
