My Republican friends tell me that Bush can't lead the country effectively because his base of support is too small.

Gore is preferred by most voters and most Americans. Bush represents the minority view. Most Americans support Gore's views on the issues.

There was a slight edge in the popular vote to Gore.
However, Gore has lost the majority of public support by what he is doing. He now is losing credibility in all recent polls. People are fed up with him and if elected he will be a 4 year lame duck. The man has destroyed himself.
I have heard a number of people including a close relative of mine express their distaste for his actions and in particular state they were sorry to have voted for him.

Kenneth

When people say to me---most people believe this or that; or most people feel this way; or most people don't think this---I say----prove it. So prove your statement!

That is a ludicrous statement-----the people who voted for Bush, yours truly being one, did so not because he needs to please the Dems but because he represents the Republican philosophy of government.

No need for Bush to move to the left and please liberal Dems or liberals generally.

A USA today survey revealed that most Americans believe in small government not big government. Therefore you are wrong. In my opinion the only reason the race was even close was the abortion issue. I know women who would jump to the Republican part in a moment but cast their votes for the Democrats solely due to that issue.

Yes if you go to high population centers with low income people, democrat supporter will make sure that the all for a pack of cigarettes will vote early and often. 30 thousand votes in ny and chicargo 50 thousand in los angelos and you repeat this all over the country Gore has a few million extra votes. I doubt that Gore ever had the support of most American's. After the screw the Military absentee vote strategy of Gore, I don't think he will be quite so popular.

The terms you're using ("most Americans" and "minority view") are a little too strong. Of Americans who expressed their opinion by going to the polls, about half preferred Gore and about half preferred Bush. Yes, Gore got a majority of the popular vote, but it was a razor-thin majority. Congress is divided almost 50-50 as well. Neither side can claim a mandate and both parties will need to move even more to the center - which I think will happen.

On another subject - as I write this, it seems that Gore will likely not pick up enough votes from the hand counting to defeat Bush. Ironically, therefore, I think the hand counts that Republicans have opposed (out of a lack of confidence that their man would win, I think) will prove to be a real plus for Bush. How fortunate for Bush that Baker and Harris did not succeed in preventing the hand counts. If they had been blocked, many would speculate that Bush would not have been the winner had they occurred and thus was a usurper in the White House.
