Kenneth,

Planning and having are two different things. Nortel's XROS mems switch hasn't made it out of the lab as yet....and may never reach commercial fruition. Meanwhile Ciena's CoreDirector is moving into it's second generation.

BTW, the CoreDirector is a SONET killer. Aside from acting as an optical cross connect, the only function a mems is capable of handling, the CoreDirector eliminates the need for SONET Add/Drop Multiplexers.

You may have missed Ciena's announcement of a channel spacing breakthrough using proprietary Bragg Fiber Gratings. Next year, Ciena will offer 12 1/2 G channel spacing which permits 16 terabits at OC-192. It is not much of a speculation to envision same with OC-768, or 48 Gigabits per second. Can Nortel keep up the pace and continue to follow Ciena's lead?

It is no wonder Qwest is junking its SONET gear and upgrading to state-of-the-art DWDM equipment. It will be interesting to see how it all shakes out.
