Powell could have had the nomination if he'd wanted it. He would have beat Gore in a landslide.

I would have supported him without hesitation.

Powell did toy with idea of presidency. But he was absolutely sure that religious right and deep south was not ready for a black person leading the country. Alma Powell was also a major factor in deciding against running for president.
There is always some mysticism about an unknown quantity and that has been Powell's charm so far. If he were to get into the grind of politix, his charming qualities and leadership skills would be blown to smitherns by his opponents. Besides his tenure as a General during war, what else is so defining about him, that you think is a strong argument in his favor over leaders like John McCain or other Senators?
