Intersting points. The only one I disagree with is Powell's weakness in leadership compared to say McCain. One doesn't get top be the Chair of the JCS without having strong leadership and negotiating skills. The bickering & spread of FUD among the branches for dollars is as vicious as the ORCL/SEBL and NOK/QCOM battles. I would CONSIDER Powell as a candidate but as you say there is a mystery about him and I would want less mystery.

I do not favor Powell as President, but he would have
my enthusiastic support as Secretary of State. He
is very cautious about the use of military force,
understands that the use of force has to be prepared
carefully and requires overwhelming superiority, and
understands also the need for careful coordination
and cooperation with allied countries.

McCain would be a disaster as president. His managerial
skills are terrible and his people skills are severely
lacking (you can only call your colleagues a**holes
so many times without getting them sore at you). May be
Democrats should nominate him since they like him
so much.

Powell has always polled very strongly. I question your assertion that he was worried about how he would be accepted. He has given different reasons in public. Where do you get your information?
