Prices of 64Mb DRAM Microchips Plummet
November 20, 2000 (SEOUL) -- Amid a fall in the prices of 64-megabit DRAMs, worries are rising over production cuts by chipmakers, including Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Hyundai Electronics Industries Co., Ltd., NEC Corp. and Hitachi Ltd.

Analysts noted that semiconductor makers will have no choice but to cut production if the prices of chips fall below production costs.

The price of the benchmark PC-100 type 64-megabit SDRAM fell 8.97 percent from the previous close to US$3.55-$3.76 on Nov. 14 on the North American chip market. This is less than half the price of chips seen earlier this year, when the prices were at US$8.80-$9.33, and 15 percent lower than figures seen earlier this month.

The value of next-generation PC-133 128-megabit SDRAMs remained unchanged at US$8.53-$9.04 a unit, but were down 40 percent on a comparison against prices seen in early-March (US$12.37-$13.11 a chip).

The steep decline in chip prices can be attributed to falling industry demand for PCs, which makes up 75 percent of the overall world chip demand.
