RE: It appears that Athlon will be forced into a PR rating scheme.

Hopefully this is not the Sub-$1000 market of the former SXs and cacheless Celerons. These CPUs are sold in the performance market and most of the buyers are informed. I might be wrong, but I don't think AMD needs the PR rating scheme. I do think that the informed buyers will seek (or demand) a way to apply some kind of real-world yardstick to the P4s though.

<< Next to a 1.5 GHz P4 for $3,500 a P3 running at 866 Mhz looks like a piece of crap, but a 1.1 GHz Athlon looks like a safe choice. >>

Too bad on gateway's site a p4 1.4 ghz is about the same price as a 1.2 ghz athlon with ddr. If that trend holds all over and isn't just a short time special deal then when you see a 1.4 ghz next to a 1.2 in the store and they are the same price, but the 1.4 says intel on it.. Go ahead and take a stab at the logical conclusion most people will leap to.

Joe,

The PR scheme would ultimately defeat Athlon, the way it defeated Cyrix when Cyrix was a contender.

The PR scheme worked great for Cyrix, and it kept them in business for a couple of years. Cyrix downfall was a very weak FPU, and a microarchitecture which did not scale up in frequency as quickly as P6.
