I guess ACE proves my point, you need SPECIAL coding. Most people aren't going to have updated software for 9 to 12 months. Athlon with DDR is the best.

Bottom Line is P4 has only 2 features that make it viable, High MHz and SSE2, but it's not going to sink Athlon, and Palamino with DDR will eclipse it.

"Conclusion

How do we feel about the Pentium 4? Clock for clock performance is worse than most other processors, but it’s wrong to evaluate a processor solely on that basis. What matters is all around performance, of course.

It is important to evaluate your processor needs because you won’t be able to say whether the Pentium 4 is faster (at this moment) than the competition or not. For example, it is very fast in OpenGL shoot-em-ups and race simulators, but it isn’t convincing in RTS and RPG and shoot-em-up DirectX games. It is faster than the competition in high-end 3D-software, but it takes a serious lashing in most 3D-animation desktop or low-end workstation software. The Pentium 4 shines in encoding and decoding, but falls short in a lot of popular tools for compiling, CAD and editing tools.

<He admits that he does not have the P4 compiler for the applications he is running.>

Your ignorance is astounding.
Anand is running x86 mainstream open-market applications.
No user has any compiler for those applications and never
will. The applications are built in software companies
in isolated high-security rooms using company-certified
compilers. No s/w company would sacrifice stability of
their product by using unqualified fresh compiler, just
to please 0.01% of their customer base. Qualification
of P4 optimizations will take significant time.
