He is doing that on his own. He lost the original tally of the votes, and the automated recount. At that point, if there was no outside intervention, the state of Florida would have certified the election with Bush being the winner. I think the popular vote is a non-issue in THIS election < Republicans here are not willing or able to recognize that this election is so close. Gore won the popular vote. Not by a huge margin, but won it just the same. If Bush had won the popular vote, would you still try to consider it a "non-issue?" Somehow, I don't think so. Bush's lead was so small in Florida that it triggered an automatic, mandated recount. When that recount was completed his lead was reduced by 85%.His lead was smaller than the machines' percentage for error. No one is trying to 'steal' anything. It is just so close that it can really be considered a tie. Miami-Dade County is using the machines in the current recount process and removing the ballots that the machine stops on because it is an "undervote" - one that the machine does not or cannot recognize. The machine is stopping, on average, every 61 ballots. What does that tell us about the machines? These "undervotes" are then set aside to be reviewed/counted by hand. I really don't understand why this wasn't done in the original vote. It would have saved a lot of headaches for everyone. > The attorney general was responding to the public outcry over the situation, and his statement was non-binding, therefore it did not correct the situation. < Did he tell you that is what he was doing? Haven't you failed to consider that he was doing his job to correct an error made in the understanding of the law - which was made by Mrs. Harris, the Republican Sec. of State of Florida, by the way. They obviously were confused - starting with Mrs. Harris - about the postmark. Florida state law stated a postmark was required and those were the instructions Mrs. Harris relayed. It was then determined that the Federal law, not requiring a postmark on military absentee ballots, superceded the state law. There was confusion among all - both Republicans and Democrats. There is a conscious and forceful effort on the part of Republicans to mistakenly place the blame on Democrats. No one seems willing or able to see that it all boils down to a simple mistake. The mistake originated from the Republican side and was corrected by a Democrat, but the Republicans STILL say it was something purposeful and malicious on the part of the Democrats. Why can't you see how ridiculous it is - and, actually, how malicious it is on the part of the Republicans to do so? It is just unbelievably maliciously twisted by the Republicans. The fact that the Republicans KNEW it was NOT the fault of Democrats, but continue to have their spokespeople call it that is a repulsive, underhanded maneuver to try to inflame public opinion. The Republicans did nothing to disseminate correct information. And the Republicans still haven't let go of this supposed issue. It was settled/corrected yesterday for pete's sake. It is a non-issue.
