I heard most of what Kerry said about the fact that Gore's attempt to discard the Armed Forces ballots wouldn't disqualify him to be commander and chief, boy, what's that about? The only thing I can think of is that Gore calculated he will have to dissallow the military votes to win and this is spin control. I, for one, a now getting tired of being 'manipulated'. :)

......Sigh.

Barry,

re: Do we know if the vote checkers will be comparing the other votes cast on the ballots that have dimpled or pregnant chads to see if the voter was consistent in their stylus pressure? It seems logical that if a ballot contains a dimpled or pregnant chad that unless many of the other votes cast by that voter were also similarly dimpled that the voter did not intend to cast that dimpled/pregnant vote. If the pregnant dimple is ONLY on the presidential chad, then the voter might have indeed not pressed hard enough or that voter might have had second thoughts and decided not to cast that vote. HOW DO WE KNOW?

We devine the voter's intent based on the depth of the dimple? <g>

The Democrats want the SC to set standards. The Republicans don't want them to set standards. I doubt they will, but may say it's up to the canvas.

The thing that seems to be happening now, IMHO, is the two sides are setting things up for an appeal if they lose. Probably the US Supreme's.

You are right, this thing has gone on long enough. How do you stop it? It's like trying to get the AMD and Intel threads to agree on which is better, Pentium or Athlon.

John

RE:"Gore's frontman today, Senator Kerry of NB, is on TV saying that "elderly voters might not have had the strength to push the stylus all the way through [and caused those dimpled ballots] and those ballots should be counted." Give me a break! Are ALL the votes on the those ballots dimpled? If not, fagedabodit."

The sad thing was that Kerry, a decorated Viet Nam war Veteran pretty much blamed the military voters for messing up their ballots...Kerry was clearly called out to smooth the military voters over but failed miserably.
Amazing what these people will do and say for a few extra votes. It appears that there is no person in office or Judge
that can be unbiased in this. I fully expect the FL Supreme Court to give the election to Gore...by allowing the hand recount and dimpled ballots to be interpreted..

I hope I'm wrong...

Jim

Barry,

Rethinking your question about the "dimpled" chads.

I voted by the same punch card method. I suppose it is possible that someone could stick the stylus in the candidates hole, and push it down far enough to make an indentation in the cardboard, and at that precise moment change their mind and decide not to vote for that candidate. But I doubt it would happen very often. It seems much more likely that they intended that vote.

The only time an election canvas would approve a ballot with a dimple is when there is not a punch at all for the other side. If you buy the argument that the intent of the voter is of the utmost importance, maybe the "dimple" is adequate to count the vote.

I doubt that people would go to the voting booth and NOT vote for anyone for president which is the main reason why most people went to vote (any survey will prove that to practically 100%).
