Rise/IDT/Cyrix chips just plain sucked.

Cyrix M1 was the performance leader for a while, and stayed very close to Intel for a year or two. I'm amazed that everyone has forgotten this so quickly.

The MediaGX was the first chip to make a significant dent in Intel's OEM stranglehold, and opened up the door for AMD.

One crucial difference is that there were plenty of real world applications that ran very poorly on the celeron. Even though the Athlon beats the p4 in most applications, a typical user probably can't tell the speed difference in any of them because they're both going so fast.
