Ron: Perhaps the point I'm trying to make is that the effects of slavery are still being felt today. Much more than we realize. I read a newspaper columnist yesterday who reported that 70% of all black children are born out of wedlock. Think on that for a minute. A kid born to a crack-addicted mother, who never knows his father, who never has a good male role model ... what should society expect of him? If I were in his shoes, I'd probably be selling dope on the street corner, too. The Republicans say, "Pick yourself up by your bootstraps, young man." The Democrats say, "We recognize that you have a problem, perhaps a major problem. Perhaps you need a few helping hands along the way."

I see one party as addressing the problem, and the other party as ignoring the problem.

I have no problem with affirmative action. I suspect neither does Colin Powell. He was a beneficiary of affirmative action.
